Tips for Using Essential Oils

When it comes to using essential oils the applications are endless. It can be overwhelming when you first start out because there are so many options. This is nothing to worry about because there are a few tips to help you get started using your essential oils confidently.

Invest in a Resource Book

A resource book will be your go to constantly in the beginning and consistently as you use the oils. My absolute favorite is The Essential Life. It is thorough and oh so beautiful. This is key for you to feel comfortable because you know you have the best advice on hand. The Essential Life has numerous applications, DIYs, and recipes. You will continue to learn about the oils while you use them.

Start in One Area

It is easiest to decide what area of your life you are most interesting in using the oils. If you are most interested in green cleaning then focus down into that area. Learn how to make those effective, safe cleaners first. If you invested in your oils as a substitute for dirty air freshers and toxic candles then focus there. Give yourself time to play with different diffuser blends and to really enjoy that particular application. The point is to get comfortable with one area first. This will help you get to know your oils.

Use Them Daily

Whatever the use is that you choose commit to using them daily. This is part of the getting to know you process as well. Your body with become acquainted with the oils as will you. You will begin to notice the buoyant feeling of Peppermint and the calming vibe of Lavender. You’ll learn that Lemon is a natural goo gone and an uplifting scent if you are feeling run down. The more you use your oils, the more comfortable you will be adding them to other areas of your life because you already know the effect that they have.

Wise Experimentation

To be clear there are guides to essential oil safety. Don’t add water unless you are using it as a driver to push the oils deeper into your skin. If any irritation occurs use a carrier oil to remove the essential oil. Like removes like. Don’t put hot oils on sensitive parts of your body. Don’t put oils in or near your eyes or ear canals. You must use your common sense along with your resource book but it is natural to become curious about other uses for oils in your life. The oils are powerful tools that you now have at your disposal. Use them wisely but don’t be afraid to look in your resource book to find how Magnolia may help ease feeling of stress.

Don’t Give Up

It inevitably happens. You’ve hear Lavender is great for sleep but it winds up your little one before bed instead of calming them down. This is bio-individuality at work and it is a wondrous thing. We are so unique even mother to child what works for one may not work for the other. Don’t be afraid to try another oil if the first doesn’t work. There are numerous oils that serve very similar purposes. This is why my first piece of advice was to invest in a resource book. Need to know about what oils promote rest? Hit up that index and it will lead you to more than a few that do just that.

Go with Your Gut

Momma you were given a superpower when you had your babes that is called mother’s instinct. It’s nothing to push aside. We have been told so many times to ignore those nudges in our hearts but I’m telling you listen deeply to your intuition. You know your babies better than anyone else. Follow your gut with the oils and watch your intuition take root in other areas as well.

Have Fun

Essential oils are beautiful tools but they are also truly beautiful scents. Enjoy them! Keep a few of your favorites on your bedside table, a few at your desk, use them as a beautiful aromatic dressing after a shower or bath (with a beautiful carrier oil of course) and enjoy them. Their work is to support your in all areas of your life. Even the area of your life labeled “just for me”.
