Essential Oils: Powerful Tools
Essential oils are volatile compounds found in plants. The bark, stem, roots, flowers of various plants can be processed (steam or cold-pressed) and we get essential oils. The term volatile sounds like a bad thing but it simply means that the molecules that make up the oil readily transform from liquid to gas at room temperature.
How do they work with our bodies?
Essential oils are used in three ways: aromatically, topically, and internally. Not all oils are suitable for all three uses so it is important to read labels to know what uses are suggested. The most popular use may be aromatically. By breathing in the volatile compounds of the oil the essential oil is quickly absorbed by the smell receptors that have a direct link the the limbic system through the olfactory bulb. The limbic system supports various functions such as smell, behavior, emotions, and memory. Some oils have invigorating effects while others promote calmness.
The doTERRA Difference
I have been using essential oils for over 15 years. During that time I have used quite a few brands. In January of 2017 my interest in essential oils was re-kindled as I was looking to continue my journey of holistic health and I went on a researching binge.
I had heard of doTERRA previously from a friend, but at that time couldn’t believe that all essential oils were not created equal. I thought, “They are all the same oil from the same plants. What difference does it matter what company you buy from?”
I was absolutely incorrect.
During my researching binge I was blown away by doTERRA’s dedication to purity and their dedication to every single person along the supply line starting with small farmers. What they stood for as a company was unlike anything else I could find.

Purity
Much of the point of using essential oils in my home is to get rid of toxins. Unfortunately many companies cut corners to make a profit. Labels can say “All Natural” and “PURE” but what testing is being done to ensure purity? The standard of doTERRA oils is called Certified Pure Tested Grade or CPTG. All oils are rigorously tested to ensure that there are no impurities or additives in the essential oils that you and your family use. doTERRA’s sourcing model cannot be beat. Essential oil sourcing can be quite sketchy and is often not an integral process. There are middle men making money while farmers are robbed a fair wage. This is not the case with doTERRA. They work directly with farmers and suppliers to make sure that from the very beginning fair wages are being paid. Add to this their care for the Earth and sustainable practices. They understand this is about more than just selling oils.

Q: My friend told me doTERRA is a pyramid scheme. Is this true?
A: First, you can let your friend know that pyramid schemes are illegal in the United States so they can rest easy. doTERRA uses the business model of network marketing. It means that instead of telling my besties (and all of you) about products that I love and adore with no reward I get to build a business around my nature of sharing with others. Think of all the times you have raved about an amazing product to your friends and then they went and bought it because of your recommendation. That’s network marketing.
Q: Aren’t all essential oils the same?
A: No. Essential oils are having a moment so that they are available almost everywhere. The difference is quality. There is no governing body for essential oils so dilution and adulteration are rampant practices. doTERRA does a myriad of tests to be sure that their oils are PURE (no synthetics, no fillers, no pesticides, no heavy metals). Add to that their co-impact sourcing model which turned the essential oil chain on its head and gave power to the growers and gatherers.
Q: Can’t I just buy doTERRA oils off of Amazon?
A. You could but you run the risk of purchasing counterfeit doTERRA oils. It is very easy to make a dupe look like a doTERRA oil but if it isn’t coming to you from the company themselves it is almost assuredly a fake. See the previous question for more on that.
Q: Do I have to sell anything to get the 25% discount?
A. Absolutely not! In fact most people who use doTERRA are simply wholesale customers and get the 25% discount on all products. It works a lot like a Costco membership but with healthy purchasing options and also a chance to get free products. If you decide to become a Wellness Advocate and share your love of the oils with others you are welcome to do so but it is never required.
Q: Do I have to buy monthly?
A. Again, absolutely not! You can if you wish, but you order when and what you want. There is a rewards program if you do order monthly called the Loyalty Rewards Program but you are in complete control at all times.
