Tips on Storing Essential Oils

After someone purchases oils one of the first questions is: How do I store them?

There are a few things to keep in mind here. You will want to keep them from direct sunlight. This has more to do with heat than the UV rays. Even if you keep your oils in a the shadows but in a hot spot (like your car in the summer) it’s not a good place for them to be. You want to keep your oils at room temperature.

My number one tip for oil storage is this: Put oils in your way. Observe what oils you use in any given space of your home. For instance: Where I do most of my work, at my desk, I have readily available some of my favorite work oils. I have Motivation, Peppermint, and Passion in rollerball form so they are easy to use. I apply the oils to the back of my neck, breathe deep and let the oils uplift and awaken me to do my best work.

Put oils in your way. observe what oils you use in any given area of your home.

With all of my diffusers I keep a few oils I know I will use often. With my living room diffuser I keep Lavender, Tangerine, Balance, Peppermint and Lemon. If you have a particular diffuser that tends to gather a bunch of oils but you aren’t into storing 10 oils in that area you can make a bottle of your own diffuser blend. To do this you will need an empty essential oil bottle. Simply remove the orifice reducer and add your oils for the blend. Not sure how many drops to add of each? Let’s say the diffuser blend you love is 2 Holiday Peace 2 Citrus Bliss. Add 20 drops of each oil to the diffuser blend bottle. When you are satisfied with your blend, replace the orifice reducer and keep that bottle next to your diffuser. This is a really simple way to keep things decluttered and keep a few different blends near your diffuser.

There are oils here and there all over my home where they are most used. Lavender or Citrus Bliss in the laundry room to be dropped on Laundry Balls for the dryer. OnGuard and Lemon with cleaning supplies for quick and easy DIYs. Wherever you use your oils, put them there so you aren’t having to continually search for them or forget to use them altogether. Oils used for body dressing (carrier oil with essential oils like Whisper and Sandalwood) and my skin care oils like Yarrow|Pom, Tea Tree, Patchouli and Copaiba sit in a beautiful wooden tray where I get ready for my day.

My bedroom is where is store the majority of my oils. Most used oils are out where I can easily grab them. The lesser used oils are stored in wooden essential oils boxes. They are easy to get to but “put away” for the sake of decluttering and keeping them safe. If you have children you may want to invest in child-proof caps for essential oils stored out in the open or always keep your oils where young children cannot get to them.

Wondering what to use as organization solutions or holders? Here are some of my favorite organizational items: Rollerbottle tray, small wooden holder, rimmed trays, wooden essential oil boxes, travel essential oil cases, lipstick organizers. Anything that keeps them upright and easy to get to is a good solution.
