DIY: "Pure"fume
I might be obsessed. I want all the pretty smells, all the time. On me, around me, on me. I know I said on me twice. I had a collection of perfumes that I loved at one point in my life. A collection. Really. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then it happened. I learned how toxic they really were. If you are new to the “oh sh** I am 100 percent responsible for my own health” world I recommend you watch Stink. It can be a good jumping off point to further educate yourself.
After I became acquainted with essential oils I began experimenting making blends and using them as ‘pure’fume. It is a very simple process and not at all something you should be afraid to try. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
First things first. You will need a 10 mL rollerbottle. I got mine from Root and Petal. They are my absolute favorite rollerbottles. They have never, ever leaked. In my purse rolling around and not one drop has been missed.
Second, you will need a blend. Here is how I choose my blends for “pure”fume. I simple think, “What oil smells really great to me right now?” Then I will uncap those one or two bottles, take a sniff, and think, “What might go well with this?” Uncap that bottle, add it to my little handful of oils and sniff. I do this until I have a blend that I think smells like heaven.
This is the blend I used most recently:⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4 Ylang Ylang⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 Vetiver⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5 Indian Sandalwood⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2 Pink Pepper⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6 Patchouli⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
6 Grapefruit⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
8 Cinnamon Bark⠀⠀⠀
How did I decide how many drops? Easy. Did I want a lot of that particular scent or just a hint? What did I want to stand out? The stand outs get the most drops. My supporting notes just get 1 or 2. When in doubt go with your gut.
Next you top off the rollerbottle with a carrier oil. I used organic sweet almond oil this time. You can use jojoba, grapeseed, fractionated coconut oil, apricot kernel, the list goes on. Whatever oil you choose really try to use one that is organic. Your skin isn’t solid, it is permeable.
Pop the rollerball top on (carefully), give it a little shake and you are ready to roll.
