Review: Petit Vour Monthly Subscription
I’ve been subscribed to Petit Vour’s monthly subscription box for quite a while. When I first subscribed the cost was $15 a month and it was raised to $18 about a year ago. I have always had a feeling of up and down with it because as well as advertising being cruelty free they also advertise being a clean beauty subscription. I always find something in the box I’m excited about but there is also often something in the box I won’t use.
Here is the breakdown of September’s box.
There are four products in this month’s box. Jane Iredale LipDrink Lip Balm, The Seaweed Bath Co. Firming Detox Body Cream, Moon Rivers Naturals Peppermint Lava Hand and Body Soap, and Lauren B Beauty Nail Growth Serum.
I use the EWG Skin Deep website to either search or create reports to judge the toxicity of the products. Two points on that.
Let’s review the rating scale on EWG if you aren’t yet familiar. The rating scale goes from 1 no health or environmental concerns to 10 toxic AF (as in a known carcinogen like formaldehyde).
My threshold for comfort with ingredients may not be yours. I judge a product not only on what is in it but regularity of use. Typically I want the cleanest of the clean as you will see in the breakdown but if your comfort level is different you may view these products differently. Do you.
On to the products.
Jane Iredale Lip Balm
This scored a 2 on an EWG Skin Deep Report. (Linked here for you.) There is one ingredient that scored a 3 and that was Lemon Peel Oil. I’m comfortable with Lemon Peel Oil so I’m not concerned with that one ingredient. It is valued at $17. Will I use this product? Yes! I’ve already used it a few times and I’m loving it.
The Seaweed Bath Co. Firming Detox Body Cream
This cream scored a 2 on the EWG Skin Deep Report. (Linked here for you.) There is again one ingredient that scored a 3 but this time is was Polysorbate 80. That’s not an ingredient I mess with because it has been linked to organ system toxicity. It is these random not really okay but often used in “clean beauty” that make me want to scream but I have to stick to my comfort level and Polysorbate 80 isn’t it. It is valued at $4. Will I use this product? Unfortunately not.
Moon Rivers Naturals Peppermint Lava Hand and Body Soap
I could tell by a glance at the ingredients this would be the cleanest of the bunch. There are very few ingredients and I recognize them all. Dead ringer for a great product. It scored a 1 on the EWG Skin Deep Report. (Linked it here. ) There is no ingredient over a 2 in this product. Dream product right here. It is valued at $5. Will I use it? YES!
Lauren B Beauty Nail Growth Serum
I was super excited about this product as it seems to be the star of the box this month. Then I made the report. (Linked here.) I have to be honest it is product like this that make me crazy. It scored a 4. Is a four horrible? No. Is a four great? Also, no. The problem ingredients are Ethylene Glycol (4), Phenoxyethanol (4) , Polysorbate 20 (3), Ylang Ylang Flower Oil (3), Sodium Lactate (3), PCA (3), Propylene Glycol (3). For starters Ethylene Glycol is linked to Organ System toxicity and developmental reproductive toxicity in studies. That alone is enough for me to say no thanks. PCA shows evidence of wildlife and environmental toxicity. Is a product really cruelty free if an ingredient is linked to wildlife and environmental toxicity? That’s for you to decide. You can check out the rest of the ingredients and their potential issues on the report. Product valued at $75. Will I use it? No.
Last Thoughts
In the end I got my money’s worth. I paid $18 and will use $21 of product. That also means I will not be using half of the box because of ingredients. It’s disappointing and going through this more and more has me second guessing my subscription. Here’s hoping next month there is an awesome box to share!
