Essential Oils for Seasonal Discomfort

It’s that time of year again. Seems like everyone we know is taking their turn with coughing, congestion, or just feeling fatigued while our bodies are trying to catch up with the new year. My first line of defense when our bodies are feeling a little down is my home apothecary of essential oils and herbs. Here are my secret weapons.

essential oils

OnGuard: This blend is spicy in aromatic profile. It helps to freshen air when diffused while providing an uplifting energy in a space. I love to diffuse this oil when we are feeling down and I also love to apply it topically (diluted with a carrier oil always) to my chest, the bottom of my feet, and down my neck and spine.

Air-X: Citrus and herbaceous are the best qualifiers for this blend’s aroma. It may provide cleansing benefits when diffused.

Breathe: It has a camphorous scent. This blend maintains feelings of clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal threats. This also is one of my favorites to use topically (diluted always) over the chest and abdomen.

Cardamom: A gentler scent and action but still helpful if the menthol/camphorous nature of Breathe is too much for you.

Lemon: A bit of an unsung hero when it comes to congestion this oil is great to diffuse or use topically. I also find I love the fresh clean scent lemon brings while being diffused. Especially during the day when you are feeling down and need to rest but would like an uplifted feeling.

Herbal tea

Peppermint, chamomile, lavender, and marshmallow root. The blend I choose will highly depend on specific symptoms but especially for a dry cough marshmallow root will help as it has a soothing, moist nature. If I had a wet cough I’d avoid marshmallow. Peppermint, chamomile, and lavender will all work together as they have anti-spasmodic activity (meaning coughing less) and can be soothing to the mind as well we give our bodies the space and time they need to heal.

I’d like to make up my tea blends I am currently using in premade batches so they are ready when I need them. When I’m feeling down I’ll whip up this recipe: 1 cup chamomile, 1/2 cup peppermint, 1/4 cup marshmallow root, 1/8 cup lavender; and use 1 teaspoon of the herbal tea steeped in hot water for 5 minutes as needed. I’d not drink more than a few cups of this a day.
